AI powered cyberattacks: Technology is getting really, really good

It used to be fairly easy to spot a scam: Typos, misspellings, logos and colors being slightly off. But AI powered cyberattacks are changing the game – and they are getting really, really good.

So what can a business do to protect themselves against AI powered cyberattacks? Rick Hannam, a leader of the channel management team for  WatchGuard , recently spoke on the topic at our AccuNet Forum.

AI enhanced social engineering, deep fake audio and video and hyper personalized phishing emails are out there – getting better and harder to spot every day. While AI is a great tool for the good guys, helping to defend against and recover from such attacks, it is also helping the bad guys .

“You have to be prepared,” Hannam said in his talk.

AI is super charging social engineering. Deep fakes are getting so good, like “Is this actually a video of my company’s CFO demanding money?” good.

And when you get a phishing email nowadays, it’s tailored to you, written politely and typo-free. In other words, Hannam said, your spam filter’s worst nightmare just graduated with honors and is ready to work.

“There’s so many of them,” Hannam said.

The fact is, the cybersecurity landscape has been pushed beyond what conventional methods and defenses can handle and the speed of development is only going to increase with AI.

You cannot build a wall strong enough or high enough to keep out threats anymore – you have to not only fend off the attacks, but learn how to recover from them – quickly, something that is dubbed cyber resilience.

Those in cybersecurity are working to find solutions to this rapidly changing landscape. Now is the time to consider consulting with firms that not only take this seriously, but are knowledgeable about this new frontier.
