Everyone knows not to send money to a Nigerian prince, but the fact is, there are some common cyber attacks on small businesses that might trip up even the savviest employee you have.
Cybercriminals are getting more and more sophisticated and AI has changed the game as well. The scams are getting harder to identify – leaving your small business vulnerable to attack.
Here are some common cyber attacks on small businesses to be aware of.
- Everyone knows what a phishing scam is, and for good reason. It’s probably one of the most common – and effective – ways to get into your business’ system. These emails look legit – like they are from one of your clients or even someone in your organization. They will often ask you to download a file or click a link.
- Business Email Compromise. This is a more targeted attack than phishing, because it looks like its from someone high up in your organization – usually someone you don’t want to say no to. These emails put the pressure on, usually asking for sensitive data in a hurry and they are convincing and can be personalized for maximum success.
- Credential stuffing. Do you reuse passwords? This attack takes advantage of this, trying passwords from other stolen logins – and they use automation to make it even more successful and wide ranging.
- It’s like a horror movie. Ransomware attackers get into your system, encrypt your data and restrict access – demanding payment to release it (or else). Sometimes having a backup isn’t enough because they can be impacted as well. This is a costly and damaging attack.
While these attacks can be scary, there are ways to prevent and mitigate damage. Having an experienced and knowledgeable IT team on your side can help you set up protocols and training to keep your business safer from cyberattacks.
